10 Questions Every Player Should Answer About Their Character
Share
Most players begin by choosing a species, class, and a handful of abilities. But memorable characters are built on something more than numbers.
They have dreams, fears, regrets, beliefs, and goals that shape the decisions they make throughout a campaign. By answering these ten questions, you'll gain a deeper understanding of who your character is and what makes them unique.
1. What Does Your Character Want More Than Anything?
Every great character has a goal. Perhaps they seek wealth, revenge, knowledge, redemption, glory, or simply a place to belong. Knowing what drives your character gives you direction whenever you're unsure how they would act.
2. What Is Your Character Afraid Of?
Fear reveals as much about a character as courage. Maybe they fear failure, abandonment, losing control, deep water, or becoming like someone they despise. A character without fears can feel flat. A character struggling against their fears feels human.
3. Who Do They Trust Most?
Think about the people who matter to your character. A trusted mentor, sibling, childhood friend, former comrade, or even another member of the adventuring party can provide important insight into who your character really is.
4. What Is Their Greatest Regret?
Most people carry mistakes from their past. Perhaps they abandoned someone in need, made a terrible decision, failed to act when it mattered, or chose the wrong path. Regrets create opportunities for growth and redemption.
5. What Secret Are They Hiding?
Secrets create tension. Your character might be concealing their true identity, a past crime, a forbidden power, or knowledge they fear sharing. Not every secret needs to be dramatic but having one can add depth to roleplaying.
6. What Would They Never Do?
Every character should have a line they refuse to cross. Would they never steal from the poor? Never betray a friend? Never use dark magic? Knowing your character's boundaries helps define their values.
7. Who Taught Them What They Know?
Nobody learns in isolation. A wise mentor, strict parent, military officer, travelling bard, criminal gang, or religious order may have shaped who your character became. The answer can provide useful NPCs and story hooks for your Game Master.
8. What Do They Believe About the World?
Does your character believe people are fundamentally good?
Do they think power corrupts?
Do they trust authority or challenge it?
Strong beliefs influence decisions and create opportunities for meaningful roleplaying.
9. What Is Their Greatest Strength?
This isn't about ability scores. Perhaps they are loyal, compassionate, determined, patient, or brave. Understanding a character's strengths helps you portray them consistently.
10. How Do They Want to Be Remembered?
Imagine your character at the end of their journey. What would they want others to say about them?
That they were a hero?
A scholar?
A protector?
A legend?
The answer often reveals what truly matters to them.
Beyond the Character Sheet
Every great adventure changes the people who experience it. By understanding who your character is before the journey begins, you'll be better prepared to see how they grow, struggle, and evolve along the way.
Because the most memorable heroes aren't remembered for what they could do. They're remembered for who they became.
