Sharing the Spotlight in Tabletop RPGs

Every adventuring party has one player who somehow appears in every conversation, every plan, every fight, and every emotional character moment.

The rogue is sneaking into a castle? They're there. The wizard is researching the magic glyphs? They're there. The cleric is having a crisis of faith? Somehow, they're there too.

While it's tempting to make your character the centre of every scene, tabletop RPGs work best when everyone gets a chance to shine.

If the ranger finally gets an opportunity to track something, let them track it. If the rogue finds a locked door, resist the urge to smash it open. They've been carrying those lockpicks around for a reason.

One of the easiest ways to share the spotlight is by involving other players. Ask questions. Seek their opinions. Let their characters use the skills they built their entire character around.

"You're the expert here. What do you think?"

Simple words with powerful results.

It's also worth remembering that not every silence needs to be filled. Sometimes the best thing you can do is wait five seconds and let someone else jump into the conversation.

You might be surprised by what happens. Usually, it's something brilliant…. occasionally it's a complete disaster.  Either way, it'll probably be memorable.

The best campaigns aren't remembered because one character did everything. They're remembered because everyone contributed to the chaos.

So next session, take a step back now and then. Let someone else pick the lock, solve the mystery, or deliver the dramatic speech.

And remember, if the rogue is finally doing rogue things, stop trying to help.
